Baseball foul line

Common Baseball Superstitions

Many baseball players are superstitious because they feel these tiny rituals and routines can help them maintain success or field and perform better. Many hitters have a series of pats, taps and tugs within the batter’s box and it makes for entertaining viewing.

Here are some of the common rituals that baseball players follow:

  • Kissing religious necklaces and making the cross sign and pointing upwards after a home run
  • Tugging sleeves, tapping the bat and also patting the helmet within the batter box
  • Some players also eat particular meals and refrain from grooming before a game
  • Players don’t wash their helmets, hats and uniforms during a victorious streak
  • They don’t step on the foul lines when they come off or on the field
  • Hitters draw letters and symbols in the box before an at-bat
  • Using lucky gloves and bats
  • Most pitchers consciously avoid stepping on the foul line when taking or exiting the mound.

Popular fan rituals:

Some of the other popular rituals include singing the song “Take me out to the ball game” during the 7th innings. Red Sox fans also sing Sweet Caroline during the 8th Inning at Fenway Park.
