Tennis: Choose a Racket that Fits

Tennis is a lot of fun to play competitively or recreationally. Before you get started, it’s important to understand that your racket choice matters.

If you’re looking for a new racket or considering changing your old one, the grip size is one of the most important things you can consider. Selecting the wrong grip size can have negative effects on your game and your health.

How to choose the right one:

There are hundreds of rackets you can choose from, and it can be hard trying to figure out the right one. We’ve made it easier by giving you a quick guide.

Hold the racket in your hand, gripping it as you would while playing. Locate where your fingertips wrap around the handle and make sure there is space between your fingertips and palm. Your fingers should not wrap all the way around the handle. There should be enough space to comfortably fit your opposite thumb in the gap between your fingertips and palm.

Other racket choices will impact your performance. These include the head size, weight, and balance. While personal comfort will play a role in your decision, you need to consider your skill level and physique and make a decision based on what works best for you.

Tennis rackets are chosen based on the player’s priorities. You may want to choose a balanced racket that provides maximum shot control, a lightweight racket that offers superior mobility, or a heavier racket for improved power. Depending on what works best for your style of play, you can make an informed choice and start feeling the difference!
