Volleyball is an exciting game that is physically taxing with fun team dynamics. When taught at a young age, volleyball can improve coordination, teamwork and communication among children and help them develop necessary soft skills for life. For those who play competitively, training and drills are essential to practicing the motions and communication skills needed to be successful.

Warm-up drills help teams and individuals get their body ready for play and practice the motions they’ll need to execute in-game. There are plenty of drills which can be taught and they can help develop good habits. Repetitive drills can help improve skills and hand-eye coordination.

It’s important that you choose drills that do not get monotonous and boring, rather ones that will keep the players engaged throughout. You may alternate among the many drills which also emphasize a variety of skills, including digging, serving and setting.

Here’s one fun warm-up drill to get your team ready to compete: Ball sharing drill!

Split the team into smaller groups of five to six players. Begin by handing one player in each team a volleyball. Those players will send the ball toward a teammate, and say their name. Each player must touch the ball once during the drill and you must send the ball toward someone who didn’t hit the ball to you. The person who is passing the ball must say the player’s name when sending it their direction.

The drill is timed and the clock begins as soon as a teammate’s name is called by the first player and stops when the last player gets the ball.

This is one fun, simple drill to help your team get to know each other and get warmed up before their match or practice.
