What to Wear While Training in Cold Weather

With winter coming soon, you might have to step up your routine when it comes to outdoor exercise. It’s important to note that you have to dress appropriately for those conditions and this can be done with proper layering.

Layer clothing:

The best way to stay warm is to properly layer yourself. Wearing clothes in a specific combination can help you regulate the body temperature and stay warm even as you work up a sweat.

There are three primary layers to consider:

  1. The base – The base layer is in direct contact with the skin. Good wicking material and a tight-fitting material can keep you dry and warm. Avoid cotton as it can trap moisture, and draws heat from you. Select a weight that’s properly based on the outside temperature and activity level.
  2. The mid-layer – This provides proper insulation. It needs to be looser but also has to function well to maintain contact with the base. The mid-layers also carry moisture away from the base layer. Good materials to consider include polyester, fleece or wool.
  3. The outer layer – The outer layer allows moisture to escape. Good materials include shells that are made from Gore-Tex. Try adding ankle zippers or pit zips and ensure the material withstands tears or any form of abrasions.

Use proper layering, and eat well for any form of cold-weather exercise. It will ensure you’re more comfortable during any form of winter activity and keeps you safe from the harsh outer conditions as well.
