Soccer Practice Options For When It’s Rainy On The Pitch

One of the things you cannot control as a coach is the weather. Sometimes, it can rain out of nowhere, but that doesn’t mean the training has to stop. Luckily, soccer is a game that can be practiced indoors.

However, it’s important to know that this is a time you can take it light and let the kids enjoy the practice session. Here are some indoor training options in when the weather outside is frightful:

  • Skill challenge – Most of the games and drills require the players to stand in a line for a significant period. This should be avoided, however, as the weather won’t allow you to do so, and also poses a health hazard for young players.

Instead of a drill, give the ball to a player and challenge them to perform a particular skill 10 times correctly, in a time period of two minutes. It can also be adapted for two players and one ball.

  • Smaller games – Indoor courts are smaller, so play smaller games. It can mean setting up many simultaneous 2v2 or 4v4 games and having quick sessions.
  • Fun challenges – Practicing inside can be less fun than on grass. Incorporate some fun shooting challenges and minigames to make sure kids stay focused and attentive.

These are some of the fun drills you can have in bad weather. What do you do to make the most out of bad weather?
