Family playing with frisbee

What is Ultimate Frisbee?

One of the best memories we’ve had from childhood outings, with family and friends is throwing around a frisbee. If you lived near a beach, you’d know how much fun it was to enjoy this activity.

Today, playing with a frisbee has gone to another level. In fact, that level…is called ultimate! That’s right, Ultimate Frisbee is one of the most popular all-inclusive activities and it’s more than just fun and games…it’s a sport!

Here’s what you need to know:

The origins

The origins of Ultimate Frisbee trace back to 1968, when a group of students at Amherst University used pie tins and cake pan lids as the first actual “frisbees”. They evolved a team game which mixed concepts and rules from sports like soccer, basketball and American football.

The game has evolved over the years to having official sports bodies worldwide, with the IOC also recognizing it. This allows The World Flying Disc Federation to receive funding to become an Olympic sport.

The rules

The game involves points that are scored when a team catches the disc in the opposition’s end zone, similar to American Football. However, the sport is non-contact and infractions are resolved between the players and teams themselves.

When a player catches a frisbee at a particular spot, he/she cannot move physically, till the frisbee is passed to a teammate. The opposition must try to receive the frisbee during this action of passing and reverse the direction of play.

Ultimately, Ultimate (no pun intended!) is a super-inclusive, high cardio game that can bring out the smiles! Try organizing one and witness the fun yourself!
