Flag football game

Why Play Flag Football?

One of the most popular sports in the United States, American Football is known to draw large crowds. However, since it is a contact game, amateurs might find it hard playing because of the perceived violence and danger.

That was one of the reasons flag football was invented. An offshoot of American Football with pretty much the same rules, flag football is a variant where contact is prohibited amongst players.

How does it work?

Think of flag football as American Football with little contact. Each player has a flag tied around their waist which the other team must attempt to pull off. They can do this only when the player has possession of the ball.

The opponent team that’s defending needs to ensure that the player with the ball doesn’t reach their “goal” end.

How popular is it?

The game has grown in popularity mainly because it advocates for a safer version of American football, and can be played across ages. There is no official rulemaking organization and the teams participating come up with the rules with regards to the number of players, blocking nuances, etc.

There have been plenty of tournaments, such as the World Games in Birmingham to be held in 2022, IFAF Flag Football World Championship in 2021 and more in Europe. Overall, flag football has gained acceptance across the country and the world and is a safer yet fun alternative to competitive American football.

Flag football is also a great practice option for teams that want to work on their plays without risking injury.
