Study the Tapes: Why It’s Good to Learn from Your Losses

One of the most important lessons that sports teaches us is that life is too short to dwell on losses. It’s important that you refocus, regroup and take important lessons from the Ls you take.

If you’re in a team and have footage of your games and losses, then there’s so much that you can learn.

What can losses teach you?

There’s a lot to be learned from failure. It serves as a reminder that we can always improve. It enables athletes to make changes to the way we train and work. We can recognize our weaknesses and vulnerabilities after a failure and work to change.

As parents and coaches of athletes, you should assist your players in developing a solid base of mental toughness. This is accomplished by instructing them on how to be modest in victory and gracious in defeat.

This isn’t about fixating on a loss, but actually using it as a transformative learning experience. It can help you with better preparation and a tougher mental outlook.

Staying humble after losing:

Congratulate the opposing team on their performance and start looking forward to the next game or season. There will almost always be another game, so focus on that and return better and stronger.

It’s a difficult task, but consider what it teaches. It instills modesty and improves your ability to deal with adversity. It’s beneficial to learn how to cope with a loss properly.

As coaches, you should establish in your players the belief that losses are a learning opportunity. There is more to be learned from losing than from winning.
